NOMAD is an 11- unit Cohousing project that is linked to the saving of a community theater. The project included the construction of new housing, renovation of the theater and an addition to the theater which is used as both a commons for the housing and a lobby for the playhouse. The housing is built around a common courtyard with parking only on the periphery. The entries to all the units are through this courtyard that is punctuated with a fountain, sitting areas and a play area. The project combines affordable and market-rate rousing to create a diverse community. The design creates a transition from the curved roof of the Quonset Hut Playhouse to the single-family residential neighborhood surrounding it. Energy conservation and many environmentally friendly building techniques are used throughout the project. Stucco, steel, wood, and metal siding accents unify both the Playhouse and the housing. These elements give a unique identity to the project. 11 Units + Community Theater Renovation Mixed Income Community Housing: 15,500 sf, Theater: 12, 000 sf Cost: $1.8 million Date: 1997 Client: Wonderland Development
