This project integrates the requirements of functionality, public education and sustainable design. The facility processes all recyclable materials in Boulder County and prepares them for secondary markets. The projects is comprised of a large Recyclable Processing Center, an administration and education complex and a drop-off center for the public. Elements designed for the public include an auditorium, recycling displays and an outdoor amphitheater and plaza. An enclosed viewing gallery provides a space where the public can watch the entire recycling process.
The site is adjacent to a wetlands, so special care with the site is taken to showcase this important resource. Sustainable building approaches are used throughout the project. These include extensive daylighting, VAV Mechanical systems, re-use of roof water for landscaping, bio-swales and the wide use of products made from recycled materials.
